The movie is a memoir of the main character, Solomon Northup played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. It follows him as he is kidnapped and sold into slavery for 12 years. In the end, when he is released, his family has grown and he is a granddad. The man endured and survived multiple plantations for years in Louisiana. 12 Years a Slave is an adaptation of the 1853 slave memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African-American man. He was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841 in Washington, D.C. by two conmen. The film 12 Years a Slave was directed by Steve McQueen. Cumberbatch plays a “nicer” slaveowner, Ford. The actor has delivered a nuanced, fine, and compelling performance in 12 Years a Slave.
